What is Action Learning

Action Learning facilitates deep connection and collective learning.

What is Action Learning?

Small groups regularly work on real, work-based challenges through listening, questioning, reflection, and action; developing their thinking, building confidence, and taking more effective action.

As leaders, professionals, and individuals, we rarely create space to pause and reflect. We’re always on the go. We move from task to task, often caught up in a frantic feeling of urgency that can lead to rushed decisions and mediocre outcomes.

Action Learning provides something rare: a powerful, intentional pause.

In its simplest essence, Action Learning is a safe space for people facing similar challenges to come together, listen, ask questions, gain new perspectives, and access the group’s collective intelligence—all guided by one of our expert facilitators.

How Action Learning is Different to Coaching or Training

Action Learning is often compared to training and coaching. Participants receive coaching-style support from the set as they explore challenges and identify actions, while also developing and practising listening and questioning skills themselves. It combines problem-solving, skills development, and learning through working on real, work-based challenges.

How Action Learning Works

Action Learning is a powerful methodology for individual and organisational learning. Small groups pause and reflect on real challenges, work together to ask open questions, identify solutions and actions that lead to tangible results.

Learning through doing – planning, implementing and reflecting on outcomes.

In practice, Action Learning follows a simple cycle of working on real challenges, questioning, taking action, and reflecting on the results.

This is illustrated below.

We work with CEOs who feel isolated and under immense pressure, providing a valuable peer network where they can openly discuss challenges, vulnerabilities, and strategies without judgment.

We support managers and leaders to collaborate across departments to implement new strategies, organisational or change initiatives, helping them find solutions and make smarter decisions to complex challenges together.

We partner with organisations on their development programmes to help embed the learning and apply it within the workplace. By creating a reflective space it ensures that insights gained are not just theories left on the slides but actively integrated into day-to-day operations, driving lasting impact and tangible results/outcomes.

We help communities and social activists tackle complex issues, supporting them to work together as they attempt to changes things.

Action Learning goes beyond problem-solving: it builds reflective practice, leadership, collaboration, self-awareness, sharpens coaching skills, developing more ask rather than tell, and how to support and challenge effectively.

“I have loved the journey Action Learning had taken me on. Every session was of great value, and allowed me time and introspection with healthy, thoughtful questioning from my peers. It is such a rare opportunity to have that time, and I would encourage anyone who gets the chance to take full advantage of AL.”
